Artudio Presents Nun ra Sun / Sool ja Kuld : A Residency Exhibition by Estonian Textile Designer Liisi Tamm

Kathmandu, Nepal - 19th March, 2026 - Artudio is pleased to present Nun ra Sun / Sool ja Kuld, a residency exhibition by Estonian textile designer and researcher Liisi Tamm, opening on March 20th to 24th, 2026, at Artudio, Patan Wing, Nakabahil, Lalitpur. The exhibition is the outcome of her February-March 2026 residency at the Artudio International Artist Residency.Inspired by a traditional Nepali saying that suggests salt (nun) and gold (sun) are the only essentials one must purchase while everything else can be made by hand, the exhibition reflects themes of self-reliance, making, and the enduring value of traditional knowledge. Through this lens, Tamm explores the cultural and material significance of handcraft practices and locally sourced materials.

During her residency, Tamm conducted extensive research across the Kathmandu Valley, engaging closely

with local textile traditions, natural fibers, and everyday making practices. Her work was shaped through conversations and exchanges with women artisans and creative practitioners, highlighting the ways in which generational knowledge continues to be preserved and passed on through hands-on processes.

The exhibition presents a series of textile explorations developed during her time in Nepal, forming a dialogue between tradition and contemporary practice. By bringing together Estonian textile sensibilities with Nepal’s rich heritage of craftsmanship, the works reflect a cross-cultural exchange rooted in material understanding and shared practices.Nun ra Sun / Sool ja Kuld invites audiences to reconsider craft not merely as a cultural artifact, but as a living practice, one that carries memory, identity, and knowledge through the act of making.
